Whether you’re looking for a simple portrait session or searching to document your big day. I fully believe that you can find the photographer of your dreams when you know what you’re looking for. Throw out the thought of cost, we’re not talking money, we’re talking about so much more than that.
“Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second.”
Marc Riboud
The first and foremost thing I want you to understand about photography is that it truly is the gift of time wrapped up into tangible memories. Let me paint the picture for you. I want you to imagine moments in your life that you could go back and relive on repeat as often as you wanted. Remember the feelings those moments gave you, the sights, the smells, the smiles, the laughter, the love. Now I want you to stack those memories on top of each other like you would the pages of a book. You’re creating a gift for yourself, okay? Let’s think about the binding, what holds it all together. These moments are important to you, you wouldn’t just tape them together with that dollar store brand tape, would you? Helll no. You would do your research, find what will best preserve those precious memories for years to come. Your photographer is that binding.
From someone who enjoys delivering those beautiful gifts, here are some things I need you answer for yourself before scoping out your photographer. Grab a pen and scrap paper or open a note on your phone real quick. Jot these down and come back to them.
- What types of moments do I enjoy most? (Deep conversations, laughing, soft touches with my love)
- How do I like to be loved? (Love language)
- When I think of myself in a picture frame, what emotion comes to mind?
- Where am I most comfortable with pictures?
- Why do I want these images?
- What is my overall decor and clothing style?
Once you are able to answer these on an intimate level, you are armed with what you will be looking for in a photographer’s portfolio. Each question touches on what defines your overall desires. What love looks like, how you enjoy it, how you view yourself, where you envision happiness, why you want it documented and what look you’re going for.
Hit them socials! Take your time, keep your answers to those questions at the forefront and search for someone who consistently shows that in their work. When, not if, you find the perfect photographer for you, you will understand the quality they give you. Remember, we’re not talking about money. It’s about so much more than that.
